Soprano Recorder

This is a rare and important example of a soprano recorder from the early Baroque period. It can be classed as a 'transitional' instrument which bears some of the traits of both Renaissance and later Baroque instruments. It has a range of two full octaves, possibly more. Its importance was brought to light when it was spotted by a Swiss musician who visited Dean Castle in the mid 1990s. A study of the recorder was then undertaken by a Danish expert instrument maker who produced detailed drawings of the instrument, copies of which are now in the collection at Dean Castle.
