slit drum

Horizontal slit drum (a) carved from solid piece of heavy, dense brown wood, cylindrical, with flat bottom and long rectangular opening at top, two handles; one side of drum decorated with low-relief figure of dolphin, with nautilus shell inlaid eye and teeth; on opposite side crossed long-handled axe and shield, both with decoration of nautilus shell inlay, and line of small nautilus shell rosettes along top opening and half-way down sides. Together with two short beaters (b and c), of circular cross-section, roughly carved from light soft wood, slightly tapered proximal ends.
