Drum

Drum (puniu); The base of this small drum consists of 7 legs joining at the bottom in a circular base. The outer surface has been coated in a black varnish, slightly congealed around the binding. This is the case with many Old Hunterian pieces and indicates that the drum may have been in the collection at the time of John Laskey's catalogue. Adrienne L. Kaeppler has identified this drum as an object collected on Captain James Cook's third voyage. The drum is thought to have been obtained by William Hunter at a sale of David Samwell's artefacts. Samwell was the surgeon on board Captain James Cook's third and final voyage, where Cook was killed in Hawaii.
