back: 1 piece of sycamore, arched fairly high in centre, with grooves at the waist; recovered at edge, but not ridged; edge rounded; the curve at the waist falls at once from the corner and is only slightly recovered at the lower corner; single purfling; varnish rich brown over gold; 3 plugs in a triangle through the block into the top block. Belly: 2 pieces of pine, narrower on rh; single purfling; arching high along the midline, in the German manner; edges slightly ridged; f-holes 50mm long, rounded, wide, upright. Ribs: sycamore, lower bouts in 2 pieces with narrow black strip between; endpin ivory, with black line around centre; endnut ebony; tailpiece of varnished ebony, rather flat and clumsy, gut-tied through 2 holes; fingerboard: ?original, but looks later; raised on a small wedge at the near end; neck: 1 piece with the head, slightly angled, re-varnished when the button was replaced. Pegbox: squared edges, with centre rib along the back carried right to the edge of the heel; 4 boxwood pegs. Scroll: small, more deeply cut that V 14, with flat bosses.
