Miniature violin outfit
consists of violin, bow, silver casket for strings, fitted case in wood. Case: bird's eye maple, stringed with violin purfling; curved lid, bottom covered with green leather; steel clasp; lid lined with yellow silk, white satin ribbon; shaped box lined with blue silk; the shape of the violin and lid of accessory box cut from a beautiful piece of fine-flamed sycamore, edged at every turn with ebony, itself grooved all round the shape of the violin; 155 x 58 x 32mm. Bow: 46mm, complete and perfect in every detail; silver mounted, lined, with ferrule and eye, brass and steel screw inside; stamped 'J. Shaw'; stick octagonal, lapped with silver wire; head finely cut, chamfered, lined, tipped with silver. Violin: length of body 69mm; Strad model, with particularly handsome back in 1 piece of fine flamed sycamore, arched in proportion (like every part), with the tiny purfling perilously near to the edge and taken right into the corners; belly shows same meticulous care and skill; endpin has eye of silver, set in lines of purfling where the ribs join; tailpiece, fingerboard ebony; pegs ?boxwood, each with silver spot in end; head 1 piece with neck, beautifully carved; inside bass-bar and soundpost; accessories box now empty. Octagonal silver box, engraved with leaves, contains spare strings wrapped in greaseproof paper, still in very fair condition; hallmarked, by PPL, Birmingham (date letter illegible)
