Violin.

Technical description: Soundboard of spruce; back, ribs, head and neck of sycamore; fingerboard, tailpiece, tail-gut protector and endpin of ebony, pegs of rosewood. Soundboard is joined in the centre, the grain is not well matched, that on the bass side having closer grain than the treble side. Arch of soundboard 16.5mm. Some slight tree damage can be seen on the bass side in the lower bout region. Ebony/sycamore/ebony purfling. The instrument has been much used, the varnish has worn away in places and there is a dark mark where the chin rests against the soundboard, and there is ingrained dirt on the other side of the lower bout and on the treble side at the top of the body. The ribs and back have a light figuring, 2 piece back, the figure going towards the top in the centre and down at the edges. The back joint was not glued very well. Back arch 15mm. Varnish is a golden colour with a red tinge. The neck has been re-set at the modern angle, neck length 132; fingerboard length 270, width at nut 22.1, at bottom 43.5. Repair History: The treble upper bout rib has been broken and repaired 38mm from the neck.
