Technical description: Bookmatched soundboard of close-grained spruce. Soundhole 80mm diameter. Purfling around the soundhole consists of an ebony band at the edge, then thin strips of ivory/ebony/ivory/ebony/ivory, then several wide strips of ebony glued together to make a band 5.5mm wide, which has mother-of-pearl dots evenly spaced inside it, then thin ivory/ebony/ivory/ebony/ivory strips with a slightly wider ebony strip at the outside. There is a section of soundboard wood, 5mm wide, before inlaid ebony/ivory/ebony thin strips forming a second band. The soundboard edging consists of ivory, with strips of ebony/ivory/ebony/ivory, then ebony bands glued together to make a wide strip into which mother-of-pearl dots are placed, then ivory/ebony/ivory/ebony strips inside that. The ebony bridge (loose from the soundboard at the lower part) is 75mm long at the upper part, and 31mm wide at the centre. The lower part is a cycloid shape, with concave cut-outs on the upper part giving points which have ebony dot terminal at the end, each dot having a mother-of-pearl eye. There is mother-of-pearl floral inlay between the ebony bridge pins and the bottom. The bridge saddle is metal. There is noticeable wear on the treble side where the fingernails have scratched the soundboard. The sides are rosewood, with an ivory strip at the bottom, and ebony/ivory/ebony strips next to it and the ivory edgings. Endpin of rosewood. The back has a one-piece rosewood veneer glued onto a spruce base. There are ebony/ivory/ebony/ivory/ebony strips inlaid next to the edging. The heel, neck and front and back of the head are veneered in ebony, the heel and neck having a sharp joint, and a Vjoint between the neck and head. The core material of the head is probably maple. Heel cap of ivory with ebony/ivory/ebony strips above it. The fingerboard is of ebony, with ivory edging, and inlaid ebony/ivory/ebony/ivory bands, then a wider ebony section with inlaid mother-of-pearl dots, and bands of ivory/ebony/ivory inside. This decoration forms a continuation of the purfling around the edge of the soundboard. A similar decoration is found on the top of the head, with the exception of maple being used in place of ivory. The instrument has machine heads of brass with ivory buttons and rollers. The nut is iron. The neck width is 45.2mm at the nut, and 55.3mm at the body join. The ebony of the fingerboard ends with a bit of curved decoration at fretnine, where it meets the soundboard. Frets 10 - 17 are set into ebony pieces inlaid into the soundboard, frets 13 - 17 reducing in height Repair History: The machine heads not original; the decoration suggests the head was originally in a figure-of-eight shape with friction pegs.
