Clarinet. Nominal pitch: C/B♭.

Technical description: Blackwood, with german silver ferrules and keywork. Five pieces: mouthpiece, barrel, upper section, lower section, bell.All parts of the body are connected by a coaxial rotating metal tube. The outer wooden tube carries the whole mechanism and the tone-holes. The inner metal tube has the same series of tone-holes in duplicate. They are arranged on opposite sides of the tube, one series forC one forB♭. When the bell is twisted through about 120°, either the C or the B♭ series of holes come under the keys. The upper section is then slid in or out, the barrel slides in or out on a helical guide, as does the bell.12keys, 2rings, 2covered holes. Keymount type: screwed in pillars. Keyhead type: modern-type cups, but larger than usual size. Repair History: When purchased by Shackleton the slides could not be moved; restored by Daniel Bangham.
