Violin
This violin has the wide, flattish arching of Lupot’s model, Antonio Stradivari, and a fine, transparent, orange-red varnish. The neck is new, but the pegbox is original. The maple back is richly ornamented with the orders of Saint-Michel and the Saint-Esprit and other emblems of the French royal family. The inscription on the ribs records the award of this instrument to a student at the Royal School of Music in Paris in 1818, Joseph Clavel, a pupil of Rodolphe Kreutzer, who became a violinist at the Théatre Italien.
