Grand pianoforte

Concert grand piano by Erard of London, serial number 4,829, made in the year 1857. The manufacturing year is stamped on the side of the lowest internal damper lever. The external casework is veneered in rosewood; there is attractive bird's eye maple veneer around the internal rim. 7 octave keyboard compass, a to a. The instrument has Erard's unique patent repetition 'roller notch' mechanism with underdampers and forked shanks. This was by far the best grand piano action generally available in 1857. For this reason, the instrument was often the first choice of performing concert artists of the day.
