Drum

West African drum, 1873 (c). Carved from solid piece of tree trunk, egg shaped with the wider end pointing down and resting on an elongated cylinder; meridian line is formed of three girdles of vertical grooves, above which are seven pierced holes for tensioning cords; internally the drum is rough-hewn; head is separate and is contained within the shell; taken in West Africa during the 2nd Ashanti War.
