Transverse flute

This side-blown flute was owned by the donor's grandfather Robert Syer, who died circa 1855, and was educated at Felsted School, in Essex. It is made of boxwood, in four sections (head, top and middle joints, and foot joint), with ivory ferrules and cap, and one single brass key. The key is mounted on the foot stock bulge and would have a flat, square-cover, now broken and missing. The key spring is flat and attached to the key-touch. The embouchure hole is oval. Nominal pitch: C.
