Pungi
This instrument was from the former collection at the Maldon District Museum, Essex. It is a double reed pipe with a gourd air chamber mouthpipe. The pipes are joined with black wax and each one has a single reed which is inserted into the gourd, and made airtight with the same black wax. The melody pipe has eight fingerholes, plus a thumbhole on the back, and the drone pipe has three fingerholes. The pungi is a typical instrument from the Indian subcontinent and is traditionally played by snake charmers.
