Double kettle drum; qosh nagara

Qosh nagara, double kettledrum. Two drums, one high (takt) 2000.3.2, one low (bom) 2000.3.1, both of similar dimensions. Ceramic shells with wide shoulders, and a rounded inward taper to the rim. The bases with tin can resonators. Membranes of horse skin cover the upper rims and continue down the sides, almost to shoulders, terminating in straight edges. Tendon lacings, directly braced through small holes in membranes and covering upper part of body in lattice pattern, and lower part in long 'X' patterns, securing the resonators beneath. Small curved handles protrude at oblique upward angle from lacings at the edge of each membrane. The handle of the low drum is threaded with a string of black and white glass beads, a charm to avert the evil eye. The high drum has dark 'C' shaped marking on body. Tripod stand of plated metal with two hoops to support the drums. The playing stick (2000.3.5-10) consists of six straight twigs of weeping willow (Salix babylonica, local name: yilgam), tied together at the centre.
