Conch shell trumpet; putatara
Puutaatara or putatara, conch shell trumpet. The apex of the conch shell (Charonia tritonis) has been removed and replaced with a carved cylindrical wooden mouthpiece. The mouthpiece is encircled by a braided length of vegetable fibre, which wraps round it several times.
