Panpipes; nai

Nai, muscal, panpipes. Twenty pipes of maple wood of graduated length and diameter. The pipes are attached together so that the open upper rims are aligned. The plane at which the pipes are set is almost straight at the short end, but curves towards the player at the end with the longer pipes. The upper rims are slightly chamfered on both sides. The lower ends are set into a length of maple wood. They are stopped with cork and the lower surfaces are smoothed into an even concave curve. Beeswax is applied to the corks inside each of the pipes for fine tuning. The pipes are tuned to a diatonic scale.
