Sarangi

Sarangi. The hollow body, neck and peg-box are carved from a single piece of wood. There is fluted carving on the body, and dog-tooth carving on the neck and pegbox. The peg-box has two large pegs with mushroom tops for the bowed strings, and two pegs for wire sympathetic strings. There were originally 14 pegs for sympathetic strings at the side of the neck, 2 are now missing. There are 5 pegs for sympathetic strings at the front of the neck, originally there were 10. The skin soundtable has a large soundhole at the top of the waisted cavity. The bridge stands on a leather strap that protects the soundtable from the pressure generated by the tension of the strings. Many of the sympathetic strings are broken.
