Concertina
English-system concertina. Flat rosewood ends, 7.25in/184mm across parallel sides. Neat, simple fretwork with pine board backing. 48 ivory buttons, stamped, black and sky-blue accidentals. Square-end nickel reeds. Later black leather straps with Wheatstone-style claw clips, small nickel screws. Four-fold green leather bellows, solid gold star papers, silk on lower folds. Left-hand action has signature: J Scates; repairer’s label: W Graham, Newcastle-upon-Tyne; and owner's name and the date; Oct. 1853; Oval paper label: Joseph Scates Manufacturer, 10 Frith St, Soho, London; Serial number 245.
