Goblet drum; dombak

Dombak or zarb, goblet drum. The shell of turned wood, probably walnut or mulberry. The outer surface is inlaid with marquetry of coloured woods and bone forming geometrical patterns The decoration on the bowl includes circumferential bands and six pointed stars of two different sizes. The stem has two sections, a narrow upper part decorated with vertical rhombuses; the lower is wider and is decorated with small stars. The foot has a curved flare terminating in a wide lower rim. Four bands of alternating white and black rectangles encircle the foot, the stem and the base of the bowl. The parchment membrane is adhered crudely to the upper rim.
