Bell

Suspended bell of bronze, struck externally.The bell has a domed crown and a flared scalloped base with five indentations. The middle of the bell is encircled by a horizontal ridge. Below it is a band with representations of two pairs of stylised animals in relief. Above the ridge are eight trigrams representing the bagua. On crown, the suspension loop is formed of a creature with four legs and two heads. The chain suspended from it bears the representation of a bat, an auspicious symbol. The bell has an elaborately carved wooden stand (Horniman Museum number MT344-1998). The instrument bears an internal paper label: 'From Hong Kong-/Feb: 1873 by Dr Legge/40'.
