Kisfejes citera; box zither
Kisfejes ("little head") citera, box zither. The box is of wood, stained red and is open at the base. The table has two sections with sound holes, the largest is lyre-shaped and the other has an H-shaped pattern of slots and dots. 18 wire strings are tuned from wrest pins set into 7 carved horses' head finials. Two triple courses of strings pass over two sets of metal frets set into the table above the long side of the instrument, giving a chromatic scale. The opposite side is divided into four stepped sections, accommodating three double courses of open strings of graduated lengths, all of them shorter than the fretted strings; there are also two triple courses of long open strings. The set of frets nearest to the players gives two octaves of a diatonic major scale with an additional descent to the lower dominant. The other set gives a two octave pentatonic scale starting with the lowest fret, and having an extra note at the top. The open string sounds a semitone lower than the lowest fret.
