Percussion tube
Ratchet-operated tin can drum. This toy has a wooden handle that is forked at the lower end, with a tin can resting on the two tines of the fork. The can is nailed onto a length of wood that sits between the tines, and supports a slat of wood carved as man's face, shoulders and hat, in profile. A wooden axle runs between the tines, connecting two wooden wheels that are painted pink. A slip of wood is attached to the centre of the axle. This engages with a wooden beater, which is held by a twisted cord that runs between the tines above the axle and is positioned so that it strikes the base of the can as the wheels turn.
