English-system concertina. Flat rosewood ends, 6.19in/157mm across parallel sides; simple frets with pine backing. 48 buttons: 24 each side, ivory with black accidentals, stamped and bushed. Square-end brass reeds. Later six-fold black leather bellows. No straps, metals or screws. 3 repair dates on right-hand reed pan: 20.12.56; 27.8.59; 18.10.60. Oval paper label: Joseph Scates, Manufacturer, 32 New Bond Street, London; Serial number: 497.
