Algaita

Algaita, oboe. The body and bell are made from a single piece of wood. The carved interior of the bell is conical and expands evenly. The fingerhole section is wrapped in leather, and stitched along the back with vegetable fibre. Another, darker leather covering (approximately 41 mm long) is applied to the tube above the three lowest fingerholes. Four fingerholes, three of which are large and positioned on the main body. The top fingerhole and thumbhole are smaller and are on a separate wooden tube. This segment is leather covered, and has a tenon fitting into the top of the main body. The staple is a cone of metal with an overlapping seam visible along its length. Lateral grooves are incised in the staple to form narrow decorative bands, which are arranged into seven groups of five or six. The pirouette is a disc of similar metal, which curves upwards slightly. The reed is narrow and fibrous. A length of vegetable fibre string holds the reed together and extends to form a loop.
