Oboe; palheta

Palheta, shawm. The instrument is in three sections: a metal staple incorporating a wooden tenon, a wooden body and a wooden bell joint. The staple is long and conical, with a plain circular pirouette close to the top. The bottom of the staple is attached to a short wooden section, which acts as a tenon and fits into the body. Both ends of the body have substantial beads, the upper with a two parallel grooves cut close to the rim, the lower with one. There is a corresponding raised section at the top of the bell joint, which has a single groove. The exterior of the bell is conical and flares markedly close to the rim which has a flat exterior edge. The bell section is not circular in cross section, and the mouth of the bell is at a slight angle to the body. The body has five unevenly spaced fingerholes. Two threads are tied to the instrument, one at the base of the staple and one at the top of the bell.
