Barrel drum

Double membrane barrel drum. The convex shell formed from ten short planks of wood. The pigskin membranes are glued and tacked to the shell with iron nails arranged in two adjacent rows. The edges of the membranes have been cut straight immediately below the nails. There is a jingling metal plate on a spring within the body cavity. A metal ring to suspend the drum is attached to a metal eyelet on the widest part of the shell. A red label attached to the body close to one of the membranes is printed with Chinese characters. A paper label associated with the Church Missionary Society which sold the drum to the Museum reads 'Played by children at New Year Festival'.
