Conch-shell trumpet; dung-dkar

Dung-dkar, end-blown conch trumpet. White conch shell (Turbinella pyrum) with dextral spiral (g.yon-'khyil). The apex of shell is removed to form a round mouth hole. A brass wing (gshog-ma) is attached to the aperture of the shell. It is a rectangular plate, one edge of which continues the axis of the shell. This edge forms a cylinder with a finial at the distal end made up of a disc surmounted by a small dome. The central panel of the wing depicts Mahamaya, the mother of Gautama Buddha, supporting herself on a sal tree, before the moment of his birth from her right side. Ten seated figures (Boddisattvas?) are depicted around the edge of the wing that is inlaid with white metal discs, of which two survive.
