Crystallophone

Crystallophone with glass keys in a chinoiserie wooden box, the lid painted with a scene of figures in a landscape, on a black ground. The 24 surviving keys are very thin plates of glass with gold note names arranged in two rows spanning two chromatic octaves C4 to C6 (c' to c'''). C5, F5 and B-flat5 and B-flat6 (c'', f'' and b-flat' and b-flat'') missing. Each key is backed by 4 small red felt pads that rest on a pair of stretched strings running from one side of the box to the other. The beaters are lacquered black, the handles are probably of bamboo. The heads of the beaters are probably made of cork and each one has a strip of red felt glued to the edge.
