Duty bugle in Bb

Double coiled duty bugle made of copper with brass trimmings (rim, bow guard, ferrules, mouthpiece receiver). Chain loop brace and chain missing. No mouthpiece. Nominal pitch: 4 1/2-ft Bb. The instrument bears an official Ordnance stamp and the number 52 (inspection?). The numbers 9 and 13, plus an hand-engraved slash, could be connected to a date of assignment (September 1913?). This bugle was found by a Turkish peasant from Krithia Village (about 4 miles from Cape Helles), in the scrub by Gully Ravine during the 50th Anniversary veteran visit to Gallipoli in April 1965. Clearly associated with the Gallipoli Campaign (1915), this instrument bears a bullet hole in the bell flare and has a characteristic copper burial patina. Unable to trace the regiment it originally belongued to, this instrument was given to the museum by Captain J.S. Underwood, Adjutant of the City of London Yeomanry (Rough Riders) in Gallipoli, Salonika and Serbia.
