Feiquan Qin (Seven-stringed zither)

The top surface of the qin is made of paulownia wood and the bottom surface of the qin is made of ovate catalpa wood. The cap corner (guanjue), bridge (yueshan) and dew-receptor (chenglu) are all made of padauk wood. The qin is painted with lacquer. It has goose feet made of light greenish white jade, jade tuning pegs (with green silk tassels) and gold inlays. The top surface of the qin has small “snake-skin” cracks and "tortoise-shell” markings. The bottom surface has small “snake-skin” cracks. The qin is painted with vermilion lacquer, the underlayer of which is called huitai [a grey coating that turns black when dried] and is made of a mix of lacquer and powdered antler. The sound retainers are oval shaped. There are no inscriptions on the belly of the qin.

  • Inscriptions:The name of the qin, “Feiquan”, is carved in cursive script under the peg pool. It is dated with a square seal underneath.|A poem appreciating the qin is carved in seal script on either side of the large sound hole (longshi).|It is signed with two seals underneath.
