Musical box

Musical boxes like this one are automatic musical instruments particularly used in the 19th century. This incomplete musical box consists in a squared wooden base. In the centre is placed a metal revolving cylinder with pins, which , when the cylinder moves, strike against the metal comb, producing sound. On the base there is also a label bearing Musical Box, Cockermouth, Cumberland. Belonged to John Banks (1779-1881) Miss M E Banks 67.1952.11, Date 5 XI 1952.
