Grove Dictionary of Musical Instruments describes the instrument as a ‘short-necked lute of the Han Chinese’, with four courses of silk strings, played with the fingernails or a plectrum. Cylinder-shaped body; neck has four cone-shaped pegs (one replacement); originally eight frets: five (one missing) on the fingerboard and three (one missing) on the soundboard. There are two approximately semicircular scribed lines on the flat soundboard and the numerals ‘19’ written in pencil on the back of the body.
