The drum body is decorated in gold hiramaki-e (low sprinkled picture) and e-nashiji ('pear skin ground picture' when metallic flakes of different sizes are sprinkled on a wet lacquer surface to form a design)against a black lacquer ground. On both ends of the drum would have been taut skins partially backed with a lacquered material. Such drums were used in No theatre.
