Violin.
Technical description: Soundboard of spruce; back, sides, head and neck of sycamore; fingerboard, tailpiece, soundboard protector, chin rest, endpin and pegs of ebony. Golden varnish. Arch of soundboard 17mm. Varnish has bubbled in places. Ebony/sycamore/ebony purfling. High arching. Lowest rib goes around all of the lower bout. One piece back, 15mm arch. Plugged holes at top and bottom of soundboard. Plugged holes at top and bottom of back. Very light, wide figure, down on the left side of the back, up on the right. Head and neck show wild grain and figure in the wood. Neck 130 long; fingerboard 273 long, 25.7 wide at nut, 41.3 wide at bottom. Repair History: The scroll may be a later replacement. Partitions of original case (1179) removed c1950; conservation treatment of the leather covering of original case (1179) grant-aided by the Scottish Museums Council.
