Viola, converted from viol.

Technical description: Soundboard of spruce; back, ribs, head and neck of sycamore; pegs, fingerboard, tailpiece and tailpiece pin of ebony. Originally had a tailpiece arm, but was later altered to a violin-style pin. Ebony tail-gut protector. A strip of walnut(?) has been used to fill the place where the tailpiece arm went. Flame type sound-holes. Damage caused by different positions of the bridge. Plugged holes on the soundboard at the top and bottom. Ebony/sycamore/ebony purfling. Wide support strip to protect the back from the soundpost, other bars at the fold and the lower bout. Wooden liner between the back and the ribs. Pine corner blocks. Back of two pieces with figure rising from the edges to the centre; ebony stripe down the middle of the back. Violin type scroll. Neck 190 long; fingerboard 356 long, 28.0 wide at nut, 48.0 wide at bottom. Golden brown varnish. Repair History: The back has been flattened above the fold and the sides built up with added ribs. Neck block unoriginal. The heel of the neck has an added piece at the bottom 12-13 thick, and ebony capping surrounding the original heel extension at the back. Now four pegs in the pegbox, a fifth hole has been plugged. The neck has been grafted onto the pegbox. Several repaired cracks on the soundboard.
