Cornet. Nominal pitch: B♭ etc.
Technical description: Brass; two main tuning-slides. Leadpipe enters 3rd valve casing at the right; 3rd valve loop leaves from left and returns to front; 1st valve loop leaves from back and returns to left; bellpipe exits 1st valve casing at the right. No water-key. With shanks for B♭ and A. Valve type: 3 Périnet-type valves, top-sprung with spring inside hollow stem; alignment by unequal lugs on spring plate. Main windway through valves straight when no valves operated; registered design of February 1858 (Dr Oates's later model of 'straight through' pistons, not his 'equitrilateral' pistons). , Repair History: One leg of 3rd valve tuning-slide replaced with thicker-walled tubing. Bow of 2nd main tuning-slide crudely repaired with external sleeve. At least one of the shanks appears to be a replacement.
