Hurdy-gurdy

Lute-shaped body composed of nine alternately-stained sycamore ribs. Belly of two pieces of pine, painted around the edge with a wavy decorative line in red, and inlaid with a band of alternating bone and dark-stained wood, with boxwood stringing and inlay. Pegbox of sycamore, the hinged lid and the tailpiece both veneered with rosewood and inlaid with mother-of-pearl floral motifs and boxwood stringing. Bridge of beech. Ten keys of bone and 13 of ebony. Carved head and pegbox of sycamore, stained red at the sides. Six gut strings held by six ebony pegs. Set of four metal 'sympathetic' strings on the right-hand side, on a small ebony bridge, held by steel wrest pins. Wheel-guard veneered with rosewood and inlaid with boxwood stringing and scrolling floral pattern in boxwood and stained wood. Iron crank with ivory know. Small knob for holding trompette string now missing.
