Udukku

Wooden drum with membrane and girdle round the snares. A kind of drum popular in the south of Malabar District and in Cochin State, and used especially to accompany songs in praise of the god Ayappan (Shasta). The membrane is struck sharply with the backs of the fingers of the right hand, while changes made by the left hand in the tensio of the girdle round the snares produce a wide range of notes. This "udukku" belonged to an Asari (carpenter) in the hamlet of Chirattumanna, South Malabar.
