Rattle

Rattle made from gourds, 1870s. One of three rattles acquired during the 2nd Ashanti War, 1873-74. Fifteen gourds filled with dried seeds, mounted on four sticks and joined with plaited vegetable fibres. These rattles were meant to be attached to the lower part of the leg, above the ankle, while dancing.
