Bugle (chromatic attachment)

This chromatic attachment was introduced and patented by Mr. James Lawson, who was bandmaster of Royal Artillery Mounted Band between 1856-1886, with the intention to fit it to a specially designed bugle and give it the same compass as the cornet/trumpet. It is made entirely of brass and has three bottom-sprung piston valves, with metal pin guide, cork and green felt bumpers, and mother-of-pearl touches on buttons. The mouthpiece receiver has a ligature screw ferrule to receive an extra tuning bit before the mouthpiece. This attachment was probably a later addition to the original instrument, as and improvement of the connection between sections and ease of playing.
