Hurdy-gurdy
Hurdy-Gurdy or Vielle a Roue by Henry Thouvenel (1850-69), c.1840. Stamped 'Thouvenel, Henry A Mirecourt'. Guitar shaped with inlaid ebony and ivory. Two playing strings, and four sounding strings. Head carved to represent a woman. 'Two chanterelles, four drones, and 23 keys. Bought from S Hagger, 12 St Stephens Lane, Ipswich, 6th October 1938, Old wheel violin £5' (M. Jessup).
