Cittern or English Guitar, anon. Mid 18th century. Rose inlaid with ebony and ivory. 10 strings, pegs at the side. Metal frets. These instruments were extremely popular in 18th century, to the extent that harpsicord music was often transcribed. 'English anonymous, c.1760 - rose and head inlaid with ebony and ivory'. Bought in Ipswich, an English Guitar £2.10s.' (M. Jessup).
