Free reed instrument
Side-blown reedpipe with free reed. A node closes the proximal end of the bamboo pipe. Below this is a square mouth hole with two blocks of a darker wood inserted to form a narrow slit. This gives access to a tapered metal free reed that points longitudinally down the instrument. Five fingerholes and one thumb-hole, the fingerholes positioned on a plane less than 90 degrees anticlockwise to that of the mouth hole apart from the lowest, which slightly clockwise of the others. The small, round fingerholes are small are set in shallow, square recesses. The distal end is closed by a wooden block inside the pipe.
