Hardanger fiddle

Hardanger fiddle. Highly arched back and belly of wood with yellow varnish, decorated with a penwork pattern of scrollwork and a border of lozenges. Scroll carved into a stylized lion's head, the back of the peg box is carved with an acanthus leaf. Eight dark stained pegs with bone facings and decorated knobs for the four bowed gut strings and the four wire sympathetic strings. The strings are attached to the tailpiece of wood that is covered with horn and decorated with an inlaid pattern of chequered lozenges. Tailpiece attached to the button by brass wire. Unlabelled. No evidence of wear. With bow (Horniman Museum number M31.7.58/2a) and wooden case (M31.7.58/2b).
