Tam-tam

Chinese gong (tam-tam). Bronze ? Cast and beaten construction. Suspended by gut cord attached to two holes in the rim. Small slit (15mm in length, 50mm from centre of gong). Inscription in the hand of James Blades, on an attached paper label: '17.5" CH. GONG PURCHASED IN WORKINGTON (BEN SHAW'S HAG/HOG HILL (SECOND-HAND SHOP) C.1924. FIRST USED ON SILENT FILM 'TEN COMMANDMENTS' IN THE OXFORD SUPER CINEMA W'KTON''.
