Violin

Jeffrey Gilbert produced this violin (no. 183) in 1903. It still carries the maker's signature on the original paper label, and is thought to be one of the finest examples of his work. Its exquisite colour and varnish, clearly shows that Gilbert had been influenced by the Venetian craftsmen of the 18th century. Jeffrey James Gilbert, one of Britain's top provincial violin and string instrument makers, produced hundreds of musical instruments from his studio at 2 New Priestgate, Peterborough.
