'Gender', musical instrument which would have formed part of a Javanese courtly Gamelan or musical ensemble. The instrument has bronze keys strung above bamboo tube resonators. This piece has a large carved Garuda (winged mount of the Hindu deity Vishnu) on the front and a crowned naga (serpent) on each side. It is lacquered in red and black with extensive gilt detail.
