back: 3 planks of deal, with the remains of a carrying-strap secured by 2 screws on the short side; sides of mahogany veneer inlaid with satinwood decoration and stringing. Top: pine, painted black with a gilded raised frame; 2 soundholes, originally covered from inside with ?blue lawn; tuning by wrest-pins, for 23 courses of 4 strings, passing over individual bridges of ?varnished boxwood, shaped like sawn-off chessmen, each with a pointed roof of sheet brass; some of these are inside the instrument; nuts in brass, with red felt. Inside: a massive longitudinal bar. Length 860/377, width 410, depth 70
