Clarinet. Nominal pitch: B♭.

Technical description: Boxwood with ivory ferrules and brass keys. Six pieces: mouthpiece, barrel, upper section, middle section for the fingers of the right hand, lower section with keys, bell. Mouthpiece of dark wood, socket-type with an ivory ferrule, grooved for cord with 10grooves. Hardly thickened around socket. Socket 21mm deep, with crack c21mm.Barrel: bulbous, with tenon 18.5mm long.Upper section: Speaker liner projects c3.5mm into bore; A₄ key has ornamented head; speaker is plain. Blocks available to take throat B key for R1 but key never fitted and no tone-hole drilled. Middle section: wide ivory ferrule instead of thumbrest.Lower section: Levers for L4, tone-hole and key for R4 mounted in a bell-shaped swelling.Bell discontinuous, with ivory rim. L0: T; speaker. L1: T; throatA♮. L2: T. L3: T. L4: E₃/B♮₄; zig-zag F♯₃/C♯₅. R1: T. R2: T. R3: T. R4: T; G♯₃/E♭₅. Keymount type: blocks, swelling. Keyhead type: square flat. Repair History: Upper section: visible discontinuity c23mm down bore may indicate repair to top tenon; bottom tenon has a crack and is lined with brass for c28mm. Middle section has crack in socket, which has perhaps been lined with wood; two wooden plugs are visible on opposite sides of the bore c23mm from top; tenon damaged and lined for c15mm with brass. Lower section: the note-hole of the E♭ key is lined with brass and the key itself has been repaired with soft solder; a crack in the right-hand block of the bascule key has been glued but not pinned.
