Clarinet. Nominal pitch: A/B♭.

Technical description: Boxwood with ivory ferrules and brass keywork. Six pieces: mouthpiece, barrel, upper section, middle section for the fingers of the right hand, lower section with keys, bell. Barrel: English type, waisted, bored for long-tenon mouthpiece, not fitting to the upper section.Upper section: two key rings of rectangular section, ring of A♮ key recessed for its touch; speaker straight, metal liner projecting c2mm into bore. Cross keys for E♭₄/B♭₅ and C♯₄/G♯₅ in saddles are probably later additions.Middle section: cross key for B♭₃/F♮₅ is probably a later addition. Wide ivory ring; thumbrest ivory, small, countersunk, may be a later addition.Lower section: swelling of little-finger keys fusiform. Tenon of the middle section 0.5mm shorter than the socket of the lower section.Bell widely flared with ivory rim and unusual grooved ferrule. Bell socket is too small for the lower section.Ferrules ivory, half-round with central groove on bell, tapered with rim on lower section, half-round on middle section, tapered and bulbous on barrel; slots of rings and blocks lined with brass. The stamped "A" on the upper section and "B" on the lower section may indicate a mis-match of parts or an instrument where the two upper parts could be changed to alter the pitch of the instrument. L0: T; speaker. L1: T; throatA♮; throatA♭. L2: T. L3: T; cross E♭₄/B♭₅. L4: cross C♯₄/G♯₅; E₃/B♮₄; F♯₃/C♯₅. R1: T. R2: T. R3: T; cross B♭₃/F♮₅. R4: T; G♯₃/E♭₅. Keymount type: turned wooden rings with pivot wires, saddles, swelling, leaf springs. Keyhead type: round flat. Repair History: Rim of bell cracked and repaired with a wire rivet. Top upper section tenon has been counter-bored and a brass tube and/or a new tenon inserted: this is abnormally long and is too long to fit the barrel. However, the barrel itself is probably an early English replacement: it is out of keeping with a German instrument. The alteration to the upper section may have been part of a shortening so that an Asection could match a B♭ instrument.

  • Measurements:582 to top of barrel; 548 top tenon of upper section; bell rim overall 86.5.
